Divining For Fresh Water

*Before starting please follow preparation and priming steps outlined in The Divining Method – Part 1.

*Beginners – Please start with Learning the Basic Divining Method  and master the basics at home before attempting water divining in the field.

Use Correct Grip and  Starting Position

Next, grab your Divining Tool with the correct grip and arm position, with the tool pointing in the forward facing starting position.

For Finding Underground Fresh Water Systems

To find underground water, always begin on high ground, such as hills or slopes that serve as possible intake areas. Then, having followed all the priming and preparation instructions, and armed with your Divining Tool, walk over this area with the tool in the Number 1 position. Start with the Dial in the Number 1 position as you walk around, then after a while move the dial slightly to position 1.1, then 1.2, and progressively to position 1.5 and so on. The dial is not marked in tenths, so you need to estimate these small shifts. Minimal movements of the dial between Number 1 and Number 2 positions are crucial, otherwise you’ll be divining too deep too quickly, and you’re more likely to find salt water at greater depths.

For water divining you’ll need to use small increments when rotating the barrel and adjusting the dial around Number 1 and 2 positions only.

Keep walking around the area until you feel the tool pull left or right. Your Divining Tool will swivel left or right when it comes across a feeder stream, so take note which way your tool points.

Adjust the dial on your tool by rotating the barrel on the head of the tool to achieve the maximum pull. Pull is felt by how hard the Divining Tool swivels and turns left or right. Only rotate the barrel small amounts each time so you can better feel the changes in the pull.

With your Divining Tool in the same setting (i.e., the same number on the dial), find other feeder streams.

Each feeder stream should point towards a common location  lower down the slope. Call this common location Point A, and this is where a stream commences.

Then divine outwards from Point A to check whether there is a circular pool of underground water. For example, circular pools of underground water can be up to 50m across.

Point A is the best place to drill for underground water because lower areas down the slope are more likely to involve salty water. In George’s experience, he found that more shallow sources of water produced the best quality fresh water.

Please Note:

• The Number 1 setting on the dial indicates the shallowest underground water.
• Divine for fresh water using depths indicated by Numbers 1-2 on the dial.
• Larger numbers (3-8) on the dial indicate deeper depths and more often lead to salt water sources.

Preparation and Priming

An important part of the Divining Method is Priming the Mouth, Body and Divining Tool. Priming improves accuracy of the Divining Tool and helps you find underground water more easily.

Priming Your Mouth

When divining for fresh water, to prime the mouth , your mouth must hold a small amount of steam-distilled water for the entire time while you divine for water. To do this you’ll need to make a Sipping System at home. The Sipping System is just an empty glass or plastic bottle with a long straw and lightweight rope, and for instructions for making the Sipping System with diagrams click here. You’ll need to purchase some steam-distilled water for the Sipping System. Tap water or filtered water is NOT suitable.

Priming Your Body

To prime your body, essentially your clothing and footwear must be metal free to minimise any interference from metal fixtures with the pull of the Divining Tool. Before divining, follow the instructions listed in the link “Suitable Clothing for Divining”  to optimise your chances of finding water.

Priming Your Divining Tool

When divining for fresh water its important to prime your Divining Tool and also prime the preferred hand which will be holding the tool. To prime your tool and hand just rinse both in some steam-distilled water that you’ve poured into a plastic container for this purpose. Read more about priming your Divining Tool and preferred hand.

The Wheatbelt is an area of 154,862 square kilometres and is so named because of the wheat and sheep farming that’s common to this area. This part of Western Australia has reasonably mild weather compared to other parts of Australia, but its still subject to mass flooding and drought seasons.

In the Wheatbelt, water is a very scarce commodity during the hotter summer months. So George has always been interested in finding underground sources of fresh water, and has spent his entire life perfecting his Divining Method and developing his Divining Tool.

There are Two Models of the Divining Tool:

1. Horned Model (silver head)
2. Grooved Model (black head)

Both models operate the same way and achieve the same – they both divine for underground water. The difference is purely just cosmetic and personal preference.

The Different Components are:

1. Handle for Grip
2. Head (collective name for all components except the handle)
3. Rotating Barrel (rotates around inner hub)
4. Inner Hub
5. Notch (on top side of inner hub)
6. Nose (front end of head)
7. Numbered Dial on rotating barrel from 1 (shallower) to 8 (deeper)
8. Groove or Horn
9. Rubber Restrictor

See the Correct Grip and Arm Position for divining.

The clothes and footwear you choose to wear while divining are very important and the wrong outfit can adversely affect your divining accuracy and effectiveness. Likewise wearing jewellery or a watch can affect the proper functioning of the Divining Tool. Mobile phones must stay in your vehicle and NOT in your pocket. Following these specific instructions will significantly improve your accuracy while divining.

Before your leave home, follow these steps:

1. Remove all jewellery, metal piercings and don’t wear a watch.
2. Shower to remove dirt, deodorant, and any body lotions.
3. Dress in clean, natural fibre clothing. Cotton is best.
4. All clothing and headwear must have NO metal features of any kind, including NO metal zips or metal buttons.
5. Wear a cotton, metal-free, wide brimmed hat, also for protection against the sun while divining.

   

6. Footwear must have NO metal features. Check that footwear doesn’t have metal reinforcements hidden in the sole or metal eyelets for the laces. NO steel-cap boots!
7. If you wear a removable dental appliance that has metal parts, please remove the dental appliance while divining.
8. Spectacles with metal frames that are required for vision are acceptable.
9. Leave your mobile phone in your vehicle and NOT in your pocket.
10. Apply sunscreen for sun protection but wash your hands with mild soap after applying sunscreen to remove residue grease from sunscreen.

REMEMBER  –  BE METAL FREE!

The rational for being completely metal free is to reduce any possible interference from the metal during operation of your Divining Tool.

Using steam-distilled water in the  manner described in the Sipping System is crucial for divining fresh water. (Please note the Sipping System can be home-made from an empty bottle, lightweight rope and a long straw.)

George prefers to buy 20 litre containers of steam-distilled water. You need a large amount because the steam-distilled water has a dual purpose –

1. For priming the Divining Tool and your preferred divining hand, and
2. For holding a small amount of the water in your mouth while divining for water.

Please use the correct finger-tip grip and arm position to operate your Divining Tool:

1. Using your preferred hand, grab the narrow handle of the Divining Tool with the fingertips of your four fingertips, pressing the handle of the tool into the palm of your hand.

   

2. Your thumb should rest gently on your fingers. Keep the thumb away from the Divining Tool. The thumb position is for balance only and it doesn’t contact the handle.

   

3. Use firm enough grip to ensure the narrow handle of the tool remains in perfectly upright position, but a loose enough grip that the head of the tool can turn side-to-side and swivel left to right.
4. Hold the tool with the elbow of your divining arm bent at approximately 90 degrees. Find a position that is comfortable for your arm so you can focus on the activity in the tool.

   

5. Your elbow should just hang in a relaxed position below your shoulder.
6. Position the head of the tool pointing straight out and facing forward ahead of you, with the handle completely upright. This is called the Starting Position.

   

   

DO NOT grab the handle by wrapping your fingers around the handle.

Use your fingertips and palm only.

Or  – Inspect the Divining Tool more closely.

Before divining in the field, take time to learn and practice divining on a known underground water pipe (or garden hose) filled with running water by following these steps:

1. First please follow preparation and priming instructions indicating clothing choices and priming routine.
2. Put on your home made Sipping System and take a sip of steam-distilled water, holding the liquid in your mouth.
3. Adjust the rotating barrel fully clockwise on the Divining Tool to Position #1, i.e., when the number #1 lines up with the notch on top of the body. Rotate the barrel clockwise until the barrel resists rotating. Do not over-rotate or tighten barrel.

   

4. Hold the tool using the correct grip and arm positioning.
5. Then slowly walk across a known underground pipe or garden hose. Note: The pipe should have water running through it, so find one with a water tap you can turn on. Both the pipe and hose need running water while you are practicing.

   

6. The head of the tool should signal that water is below by turning left or right as you step over the underground pipe.
7. After stepping across the pipe, turnaround, re-position the head of the tool into the starting position with the head pointing forward, and repeat this process of walking across the pipe several times. Each time you cross over the pipe adjust your grip until you discover the appropriate grip strength that allows the tool to signal water by turning in your palm.
8. Always have steam-distilled water in your mouth during practice.
9. Adjust the rotating barrel of the tool on subsequent cross-overs, until you feel maximum pull. The pull is described as the amount the tool turns toward the water.
10. The numbers on the barrel indicate water (pipe) depth: 1 = shallowest; 8 = deepest.

Before divining for water, you need to prime the Divining Tool and your divining hand. The divining hand is whichever preferred hand will hold the Divining Tool while divining.

Once on location at your preferred water-divining site, please follow these steps:

1. Fill a small plastic container with steam-distilled water.
2. Fully immerse the Divining Tool in the steam-distilled water for a few seconds.
3. Then briefly rinse your divining hand in the same water to remove any salts on your skin.
4. No need to dry the divining tool or your hand as they can both air dry.
5. Keep the steam-distilled water in the plastic container until you’ve finished your divining session.

*Please note that if your divining hand sweats profusely while divining you’ll need to rinse your hand in steam-distilled water at frequent intervals to remove any salt from your skin.

Rinsing the Divining Tool and your divining hand in steam-distilled water immediately before commencing divining helps improve accuracy and purifies the tool, removes any contaminants or dust that may impact correct functioning of the tool.
